STEM Women Success Stories – CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy
An Inside Look at CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy
At the 2023 Melbourne event, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy connected with hundreds of students, and hired Inez and Thirumagal from those conversations, who are now thriving in IT and electrical engineering.
“We have hired two applicants who we met at the 2023 event so far.” – Lola North, Head of HR & OD, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy
“Both graduates are proving to be valuable assets to their respective teams!”
The company offers graduate opportunities in both Electrical Engineering and IT, as well as vacation programs, scholarships for women studying electrical engineering, and a highly regarded graduate program.
“We were primarily seeking out applicants for our Electrical Engineering and IT graduate streams. We were looking for applicants who were studying undergraduate or post graduate qualifications in Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering or had a Computer Science or other generalist degree with an interest in tech. Alongside their qualifications, we were looking for students who were curious, eager to learn and excited by the energy market transformation to everything electric.” – Lola North, Head of HR & OD, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy
Meet Inez and Thirumagal – two graduates who launched exciting careers with CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy after connecting at a STEM Women event!
Discovering Unexpected Opportunities
For both Inez and Thirumagal, attending a STEM Women Career Event was a pivotal moment that introduced them to career pathways in the energy industry they hadn’t previously considered.
“I was aware of CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy, as it has a large customer base here in Victoria. However, at that time, I didn’t know they offered a Graduate Program for IT graduates as well.” – Inez
“Honestly, I don’t think I would have ever come across my current company, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy, if I hadn’t attended the event or developed a deeper understanding of the work they do as a Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP).” – Thirumagal
Both graduates highlighted how the event not only introduced them to the organisation but also gave them a strong understanding of the graduate program and its potential fit.
A Thoughtfully Organised Experience
The structure of the STEM Women event played a key role in their positive experiences. From clear layouts to a friendly atmosphere, every detail supported meaningful conversations and confident networking.
“The event was thoughtfully organised and was very spacious, which made it easy to approach employers and network comfortably. The maps were informative in showing the stall locations and providing summaries of the participating organisations.” – Inez
“It was fantastic to attend the STEM Women Event! I found it well organised, with a great flow that allowed me to easily navigate the many prospective employer stalls.” – Thirumagal
Both found value not only in speaking with employers but also attending speaker sessions and presentations to better understand companies and career paths.
From First-Time Attendee to Company Representative
For Inez, the journey has come full circle.
“Having attended this event previously as a guest exploring potential career paths, it’s been incredibly rewarding to return as a representative of my company and connect with so many talented graduates.”
Advice for Future Attendees
Inez and Thirumagal shared thoughtful advice for future event-goers, especially those unsure about attending or new to networking.
“I would encourage everyone to attend for several reasons… attending a STEM event is a great way to network with people in your industry and practice communication skills before interviews.” – Inez
“To any graduates considering attending these events, my advice is simple: don’t hesitate, just go! It’s a great idea to have a list of companies you would like to speak with… you never know what interesting opportunities might arise.” – Thirumagal
Both also suggested attending before final year to build confidence and get a feel for companies early.
Creating a Supportive and Inclusive Environment
CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy values the opportunity to showcase not only their programs but their workplace culture by bringing along current graduates and women in STEM.
“These events are important for our company as they connect us with a highly skilled and underrepresented demographic in STEM fields.” – Lola North, Head of HR & OD, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy
“By having our female grads attending to show, we could show we are serious about diversity, providing a safe workplace and a job with us is a place you can belong and thrive in your career.”
Looking Ahead
CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy plans to continue its involvement in STEM Women events and encourages other employers to do the same.
“This event is well-run and well worth the time to attend. We’ve successfully employed people who met us at an event and we’ve had many more who have applied for our competitive roles.”
“Thanks for having us, see you in 2026!” – Lola North, Head of HR & OD, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy
