How we began

The first “STEM Women” assignment began in 2016 when we were asked to act as a gender balanced recruitment agency for a renowned graduate recruiter. The company we were working for could not find enough female applicants. The women who applied for their graduate jobs performed well throughout the interview process, but there were not enough applying.

Since this initial assignment STEM Women has assisted over 180 graduate employers, helping companies attract female applicants to their graduate scheme, internship and placement opportunities.

The team: who we are

STEM Women is privately owned and operates from offices within the Tempest Building in Liverpool. We are often on campus, reaching out to students and exhibiting at university careers fairs. We also meet with our clients on a regular basis and attend ISE (Institute of Student Employer) events.

We are continuing to expand and would be delighted to chat to anyone who is based in the Liverpool area and would like to join our team. It would be advantageous if applicants had event or account management experience but this is not essential, provided you have a passion for helping STEM Women!

Building a community: attracting female STEM students

The key to our growth has been our ability to grow a community of female students and recent graduates from courses with a gender imbalance. We have reached out to university departments and targeted computer science, engineering, data science, mathematics, physics and related disciplines.

We now run events in every UK region, providing employers with the opportunity to network with female students in a careers fair format. We have brought in renowned keynote speakers to ensure that our events inspire the attendees and we are delighted that our events have resulted in hundreds of graduate hires.

Our reach: STEM Women in numbers

Our community continues to evolve across all of it’s channels. Over 9,000 users follow our Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn pages. Over 3,000 students have attended a STEM Women event in the past twelve months. Our website has doubled traffic levels in the last year and has added job board functionality to enable employers to list their vacancies.

Most of our events take place in October and November to coincide with the graduate recruitment season. We have held events in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol to date.

Future plans: growing with our communities

We have addressed the immediate needs of graduate recruiters and current students so far but are aware that these needs will change. Students who take up a graduate role will gain commercial experience and become “early years professionals”. If they start their career within a technology or engineering industry, then they are likely to work for a company with a gender imbalance. We want to remain in contact with the 2018 and 2019 graduates so that women graduates can remain in contact with their peers. We are therefore planning to run “early years” career events that can offer support, inspiration and career opportunities to our experienced STEM Women communities.

We are also keen to work closely with employers, offering a recruitment agency and job board service so that we can introduce female STEM graduates with commercial experience. This service will exist alongside our events.

If you'd like to speak to us about your hiring needs, attend an event or simply find out more about what we do then please fill in the contact form and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
