Jun 23, 2023 Events 3 minutes read

On Wednesday 21st June we ran our London STEM Women Graduate Careers Event. The event attracted 27 exhibiting employers and over 1500 student sign-ups!

The event began at 12.15pm with a welcome talk from STEM Women events host, Sophie Chadwick. We then heard presentations from three employers throughout the afternoon. During the day, attendees could network with employers in Congress Hall.

The Speaker Sessions

Our first employer insight session began just after 12.15pm with Katherine Montgomery, Process Automation Manager at Diageo, speaking about her experience on the Diageo graduate scheme. Katherine shared her inspiring journey and spoke about the autonomy and responsibility she has developed within her role.

Following this, the audience heard a further insight talk from Dr Rachael Meade, Engineering Transformation Lead at AWE. Dr Meade shared personal insights covering her education, gaining a PhD and her experience of changing careers. She encouraged the audience to view setbacks as “falls” rather than “failures” with opportunities to learn from all experiences along the way.

The final speaker was Dr Ashish Darbari, Founder and CEO of Axiomise. Dr Darbari talked about his PhD in AI, how he developed his business, and his commitment to growing a truly diverse team. These presentations were followed by a live Q&A where audience members asked questions to each of the speakers.

In a second session beginning at 2.05pm, Dr Meade and Dr Darbari returned to the stage and were joined by Adina Iliescu from Diageo, to take part in a panel discussion facilitated by Sophie. We had some fantastic audience questions covering topics including the core skills for STEM roles, negotiating graduate salaries, and how to deal with the uncertainty of choosing a career path.

Networking

Throughout the day, attendees could network with our exhibiting employers in the main halls, which was populated with company banners and employers waiting to start discussions and offer advice to prospective candidates. There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the event, with lots of attendees taking pictures with the event banners, picking up free goodies, building their professional networks and finding out about opportunities.

Amazing Feedback

“It was a great networking event; very well organised and the dynamic between two rooms worked very well.” – Axiomise

Thank you for the event! I got the opportunity to talk to employers I wouldn’t [normally] think of interacting with as well as getting a clearer understanding of my options in the STEM employment market as a recent graduate! – Biomedical Sciences graduate, University of West London
