We are Subsea7, a global leader in the delivery of offshore projects and services for the energy industry. We make offshore energy transition possible through the continuous evolution of lower-carbon oil and gas and by enabling the growth of renewables and emerging energy.
Materials Science supports the life cycle of warhead components and technologies to ensure the reliability of the UK's strategic deterrent and national security mission. A nuclear warhead contains a vast range of materials including metals, ceramics, inorganic salts, rubbers, foams, adhesives, high explosives and radioactive substances. Many of these have unique handling issues and our dedicated facilities ensure a safe and secure environment to undertake material property research and characterisation. Materials Science is critical to understanding and predicting the behaviour of these types of materials under various conditions.
AWE is a high performing streamlined business, delivering extraordinary products. By joining us as an Undergraduate Student, you will make a direct contribution to the successful operations in the Trials and Test Technology Centre, where we conduct trials across mechanical, explosive and extreme environments, and maintain capabilities such as the Orion plasma LASER facility (see URL link). You will also gain knowledge and experience of industry best practice within the Mechanical Design Engineering discipline.

This placement is within the Warhead Systems Engineering Team. We support the UK’s Continuous-At-Sea-Deterrent by providing the capability to design, coordinate, integrate and verify Nuclear Warheads and enable systems to meet current and potential future customer requirements. We deliver an integrated solution, managing the systems from cradle to grave taking consideration of safety, performance and through-life maintenance. To facilitate this, we interface with the MoD and other defence partners.
AWE is currently developing a replacement nuclear warhead to protect the UK into the future. This will involve developing new manufacturing processes and has seen the start of a huge capital build programme of hi-tec facilities and infrastructure to enable the warhead designs to become a reality!
Information Services (IT) provides the People, Processes and Technology to facilitate the collection of AWE’s Data, Knowledge and Information from contributors, managing and storing it to optimise its efficient retrieval. Our people combine technical skills with an understanding of broader business objectives to enable the AWE to achieve its strategic goals and support National Nuclear Security.
As an undergraduate student within the Modelling Team in Materials and Analytical Science, you will get the opportunity to work in an exciting part of AWE through projects which may include working on a range of models and codes, utilising several coding languages, helping deliver our mission.
During your placement, you will understand the impact you can make as a project manager. Supported by both the project management and science community your growth will be nurtured as you apply existing and new skills to genuine projects.
