How to Make the Most of STEM Women Events: A Guide for Students and Graduates

Attending a STEM Women careers event is a fantastic exclusive opportunity to connect with top employers, gain insightful industry advice and kickstart your early career. If you are a STEM student or recent graduate, read our guide on how you can make the most of your experience and leave the event feeling confident, connected and inspired!

1. Do Your Research Before the Event

Some employers cannot be promoted in advance, so we can’t disclose them ahead of the events, however, we recommend taking a look at the employers we have worked with in the past and their industries to prepare yourself for the types of people you will meet and the pathways to discover.

Be open to even the unexpected opportunities that you may not have considered before! Try to frame your skills, knowledge and experiences to fit as many opportunities that you may find, transferable skills and applying yourself and experiences to new challenges are key to showing employers how you are adaptable and innovative.

Prepare a few tailored questions for the companies in the different industries you are interested in, and any career advice you’re looking for!

2. Update Your CV and LinkedIn Profile

Before the event, make sure that your CV is polished and up to date. Include any work experience, your education, volunteering and extracurricular skills and hobbies and a memorable personal introduction! Feel free to bring printed copies and ensure that your LinkedIn profile reflects the same information, so you’re ready to make impressive and memorable connections.

Bonus tip: Add a professional-looking photo to your profile and a headline that highlights your field of study and career interests (e.g., “Final Year Mechanical Engineering Student | Passionate About Renewable Energy”).

3. Practice Your Introduction

You’ll have the chance to meet recruiters and industry professionals face-to-face. Prepare a short “elevator pitch” to introduce yourself, who you are, what you’re studying, and what kind of roles you’re looking for.

Example: “Hi, I’m Aisha, a final-year Computer Science student at UWE. I’m really interested in cybersecurity and ethical hacking, and I’m currently looking for graduate roles that offer training and development opportunities.”

4. Network with Confidence

Remember, the employers are there because they want to meet talented students and graduates like you. Be friendly, show genuine interest, and don’t hesitate to ask about application tips or what they look for in candidates.

Even a short conversation can make a lasting impression. Being your genuine self and asking questions is all that is expected of you

5. Follow Up After the Event

After the event, connect with the professionals you met on LinkedIn and send a quick thank-you message. Mention something specific you spoke about to help them remember you.

If you’ve been given information about job openings, be sure to follow up and apply as soon as possible!

6. Stay Inspired and Take Action

STEM Women events are about more than just job-hunting, they’re about building confidence, community, and momentum in your career journey. Keep in mind that each STEM Women event hosts different employers, so its worthwhile attending more than one during your time as a student/graduate! Use the experience as motivation to keep developing your skills, applying to roles, and seeking out new opportunities.
