About the role
The Owen and Barnes labs are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) for two years, with the possibility of extension for a further two years. The role involves using a range of in vitro and in vivo approaches to investigate how knockout and drug inhibition of the mitochondrial protein TSPO protects against vascular dysfunction in early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
What you would be doing
Building on positive results in rodent models, we are running a clinical study to test the effect of a TSPO ligand on cerebrovascular function in individuals with early Alzheimer’s disease. The focus of this project is to understand the mechanism by which TSPO ligands protect the vasculature. The postholder will collect and analyse data using various in vitro and in vivo approaches. A background in cellular biology and data analysis is essential, and knowledge of neuroscience, vascular biology or mitochondrial biology would be an advantage.
What we are looking for
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with expertise in neuroscience, vascular biology or mitochondrial biology, who wishes to use this position as a platform towards securing a nationally competitive fellowship.
What we can offer you
- The Barnes and Owen labs have a strong track record of supporting postdoctoral researchers to secure competitive fellowships. We will provide structured guidance in preparing fellowship applications, and the postholder will also have access to the UK DRI Early Career Postdoctoral Network. Additional benefits include:
- Access to state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure
- Networking and international travel opportunities
- The opportunity to advance your career at a world-leading institution, contributing to science with real impact
- A sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days annual leave and a generous pension scheme)
- A wide range of workplace benefits, including flexible working from day one, comprehensive family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and a cycle-to-work scheme
- Interest-free season ticket loans for travel
- An inclusive, collaborative, and diverse workplace culture, supported by staff networks and resources to promote personal and professional wellbeing
